Compost ambassadors

What are ‘compost ambassadors’?
Compost ambassadors are volunteers from across the county who are either experienced composters or people who are dedicated to the cause and willing to learn more. Click here to contact a compost ambassador.
Why are compost ambassadors necessary?
Composting can prevent 50% of household waste going to landfill sites. It is estimated that half of our household rubbish is made up of material that could be composted, e.g. kitchen scraps and garden waste. What many people do not know is that there is other waste that can be composted e.g. paper and vacuum cleaner contents.
A number of research papers have been published highlighting that a lack of information and perceived problems, (such as having to be a good gardener) are the biggest barriers to composting…. This is where the compost ambassadors come in! Ambassadors provide a network of friendly enthusiastic people offering ‘on the ground’ support and assistance to composters across Wiltshire and Swindon.
What happens if I volunteer as an ambassador?
You will receive:
- Free training in home composting and other related environmental issues.
- Free trips to relevant sites, such as the local landfill site.
- Access to an extensive bank of resources, including reference books, presentation material and assistance from national organisations.
- All out-of-pocket expenses, e.g. telephone and mileage will be reimbursed.
- Support and advice from the Waste Minimisation Officer at the Trust.
- A great sense of satisfaction and achievement as you become part of a supportive network of enthusiastic individuals, with the chance to attend regular social events.
What would I have to do if I became an ambassador?
It is hoped that compost ambassadors will encourage local people to compost and to help out with any difficulties people are experiencing. This can be done by:
- Providing on the spot advice in your local area.
- Inviting local people to visit your own composting systems.
- Talking to people at local events, like carnivals or fetes.
- Visiting neighbours who may have composting problems.
In fact you can do your bit to promote home composting in just about any way you choose! The waste minimisation team is always available to help support you and offer any advice or provide any resources you may need in your role.
We would like people who are willing to:
- Communicate with all sectors of the community and generate enthusiasm about composting
- Act as a local contact point for the public
- Commit some of your time (that is suitable to you) to the project.
