About us

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is unique in being the only organisation concerned with all aspects of the environment in Wiltshire. We are one of the UK’s most successful nature conservation charities. Since the Trust’s formation in 1963 out of concern for the colony of Purple Emperor (Apatura iris) butterflies in Blackmoor Copse, we have created 37 wildlife havens, effectively lobbied local and national government and dramatically reduced waste in Wiltshire. We promote the idea of ‘Rebuilding Biodiversity’ and remain committed to promoting community action, working with young people, promoting environmentally friendly actions and life-styles and inspiring people about nature and the environment.

We are also a member of The Wildlife Trusts Partnership. A nationwide network of 47 local trusts working for a better future for wildlife. Supported by over 700,000 members, together we care for more than 2,560 Nature Reserves throughout the United Kingdom and are dedicated to conserving the full range of the UK's habitats and species.

The world of nature is an important part of what makes life worth living. We depend on it to support us. Wiltshire has a wonderful diversity of wildlife and landscapes. Wild places where the song of the Skylark (Alauda arvensis) high above the wildflower meadow can be heard and the ghostly white of a Barn Owl (Tyto alba) hunting at dusk can be witnessed. But Wiltshire’s wildlife habitats are under threat. Every day more of our precious places are lost to fragmentation, development and neglect. We work with landowners, farmers, communities and individuals to protect, monitor and restore habitats and the wildlife they attract.

As we increase the pressure on our natural resources we risk losing much of nature’s richness and variety. Pressure on our environment is increasing and global warming is beginning to seriously affect our climate. We are passionate about reducing the damage done to our environment, the impact of climate change and promoting a sustainable future for Wiltshire.

We do not allow wildlife and the environment to slip down the local or national agendas. We bring news of the environment (whether good or bad) to the fore. We work tirelessly to raise awareness of the natural world, to tighten conservation laws and spearhead the fight to save our environment.

Mission

The Trust’s mission is to:

  • Rebuild biodiversity across Wiltshire by changing the way we design, manage and behave in the landscape
  • Achieve a fundamental shift in people's behaviour, values and actions so our lifestyles become more sustainable

Our goals are

  • To create and enhance havens for wildlife
  • To stand up for wildlife and the environment
  • To reduce the ecological footprint of Wiltshire and Swindon

Strategic Plan

Download a copy of our Strategic Plan for 2005-10. In this plan we set out the purpose of the Trust, our vision, our mission and the goals for the next five years. For each goal we suggest a number of strategies that will be employed to enable us to meet the goal. These strategies may change during the five-year life of the plan to reflect changing circumstances.
